Butler Family Lore
Welcome all FitzWalters, you sons and daughters of Walter -- The Butler Family.
Our family motto, the French saying, "Comme je trouve" means, "As I find
it" in English. If you want to

Origin of the Family Name
Walter, a Norman, was a chief aide to William the Conqueror and assisted
in the conquest of the British Isles in 1066. The famous "Battle of Hastings"
concluded that war between the Normans and the Angles & Saxons. William
became King of the British Isles and appointed Walter to Lord Butler
(or Chamberlain) of Ireland. Walter's heirs became the hereditary stewards
for the King and became known as FitzWalter, Lord Butler of Ireland. The
exemplary service over generations earned the honorary title, Butler, which
was bestowed on the family as surname.
